"My first meeting with Hilary was through a cross country technique lesson that was given to me as a Christmas gift. At that lesson, while climbing a long but not too steep hill, I shared with her my history of asthma, an affliction dating back to my childhood. I did this mostly to just catch my breath. I related how my symptoms had been very severe for years, even to the degree that there once was a time that I would have never thought skiing was remotely possible, but now were under control due to the advancements in asthma medication. And although my steroid medicine had given me enough confidence and freedom to participate in intense activities without the need of an emergency inhaler, I had come to accept my performance limitation for what it was. Plus, I added, being reliant on a medication went against my independent nature.
Knowing Hilary was an acupuncture therapist I asked her about her practice and experience in treating asthma. Satisfied with her answers, I decided to give it a try. I had once dreamed of competing in a Worldloppet race in France, but had given up finally because of my asthma, and because I had no more additional time to commit to training.
I can’t say exactly when I started to notice a difference but I could definitely feel something was happening with my lungs. Over time and strictly on my own volition I started to cut back on my meds, ultimately cutting them out entirely. This was a little unsettling for me since I had been on one med or another since I was in elementary school, but I was doing this under controlled conditions and always keeping my emergency inhaler close in hand.
I have been now been off my meds for over two months and have never felt – or performed better. I have biked up my usual massive hills, roller-skied, run and participated in numerous high-intensity physical activities without any medication and without any asthma symptoms. Other past triggers — dust, cat hair, pollen and various airborne allergens — have not been a problem. The results have been nothing short of miraculous!
Along the way she has also helped me recover from several of the usual exercise related injuries to my hip, knee, Achilles, and hamstring. I cannot thank her, or praise her enough. Hilary is a caring and talented practitioner who takes the time to listen and understand her patients. She is totally committed to helping you live your life to its fullest.
I have signed up for my race in France this February, and confident that if I don't finish it had nothing to do with my lungs.
I would recommend Hilary to anyone who is willing to try a different and fun approach to medical treatment.- Michael
